So here I am, 10+years after finishing my masters in journalism, trying to define what exactly will be the focus of my PhD in communication. I suspect I am not alone when thinking, how do I narrow my focus to one question, when I care about soooo many things? (you don’t become a journalist for lack of curiosity, let me just say that).

I do have a vague idea of what I would like to do though. I do know what drives me and I know what does not. For me, my focus is on the media, and it always goes back to the profound link between journalism and democracy. For all its faults, its volatility and its frivolity, journalism is essential to democratic life. One does not exist without the other. And it is around here, in this very complicated and symbiotic relationship, that I suspect I will remain looking for questions and answers.
