I had the pleasure to work as a judge last week at the 2017 DERG Student Symposium, an event organized by professors Rukhsana Ahmed and Luisa Veronis at uOttawa. Graduate students from different departments presented 5 papers and 5 posters about issues ranging from the representation of Afghan women in Western media (there was a lot of talk about Time magazine…); why marketing lip chap to men opens questions about gender performativity and social construction of gender stereotypes; the narratives of newcomers to Canada and how settlement policies might affect them; a history of feminist movements in Egypt (so interesting!), and many other fantastic topics.
It was an intense and intellectually challenging afternoon and I was lucky to take part in it. See below for a full list of presentations and to see the students’ names.
